Effective Interior Design should involve several elements.  To me, the first is that the home owner's personality and interests are highlighted tastefully throughout the home.  A good designer can work with a client to help discover how to best represent their client through design - choosing certain fabrics or patterns, historical pieces or modern inspired, using color or neutrals, pulling global inspiration or a minimalist approach - your designer should be asking you about what inspires you.  When the work is done, you should feel inspired to be more true to yourself in your home.
